‎Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) does not specify any standards for domestic exhaust fans. Therefore, none of the models tested carried the ISI mark. CERS tested the exhaust fans for power leakage, insulation resistance, earthing continuity, electrical input and protection against direct current. All of them were found to conform to the safety requirements for commercial or industrial purpose ventilating fans set by the BIS.

‎Usually exhaust fans are fitted with an external guard (grill or mesh). Such guards are useful to prevent acci dental contact with moving parts of the fan.

‎The tests revealed that though all the models tested conformed do the safety tests, their air delivery and electric tricity consumption differed widely and hence, their service value also varied. Consumers should make a conscious decision depending on their need. For small spaces, an exhaust fan with high service value would be best because such a fan will give you sufficient air delivery with low energy cost. But for bigger spaces perhaps you wouldn't like to compromise with the air delivery of the fan, even if it adds a little more to your energy bill

‎Comprehension:

‎(77-80) Read the given passage and answer the questions that follow.

‎Theoretically, though, the Judiciary is expected to adjudicate or evaluate the policies promulgated by the Legislative or Executive wing of the government, it, equally importantly, checks excesses committed by the other two branches and enforces the rights of the people in case of default or distortion by the Legislature and Executive in the discharge of duties, using the power of judicial review. The Judiciary is looked upon today, perhaps more than ever before, for removal of the maladies in public life. One reason may be the general disenchantment of people for the other limbs of government. While the Legislature and Executive in a parliamentary form of government are exposed to the pulls and pressures of the electoral forces, the judiciary well performs the entrusted task of holding the scales of justice even and aloft. The transition from the colonial administration to the administration of a welfare state has generated onerous response sibilities for the Administration for securing and promoting the legitimate interests of the people. Today, the government has to undertake multifarious political, social and economic activities in discharge of its constitutional responsibilities and in the process exercise of a large measure of discretionary powers becomes inevitable. The

‎Pageno:28

‎increase of administrative power is fraught with the danger of its abuse. Failure to use, as well as abuse, of its powers by the Administration is sure to disturb the heart-beat of social aspiration, thereby, necessitating appropriate correctional therapy. The judiciary operates as a mechanism of this correction and judicial activism serves as potent pacemaker to correct, as far as possible, mal-functioning in violation of the constitutional mandates and to stimulate the State organs to function in the right direction. Balanced judicial activism is, therefore, indispensable for imparting the needed vitality to the rule of law in a welfare state.

‎77. Today, why judiciary is expected to play other vital roles apart from providing justice?

‎a. Legislature and Executive cannot alone discharge their constitutional duties.

‎b. There is always a possibility of abuse of power by Legislature and Executive.

‎c. Pressure applied by the electoral forces alone cannot check the excesses committed by the Legislature and Executive.

‎In times of social fragmentation, vulgarity often

‎becomes a way of life. To be shocking becomes more important than to be civil or creative or truly original. Given the degree of vulgarity in out society, cynicism seems almost irresistible. But cynicism represents a secession-from society, a dissolution of the bonds between people and families and communities, an indifference to the fate of anything, beyond the self, Cynicism is deadly. It bites everything it can reach like a dog with a foot caught in a trap. And then it devours itself. It drains us of the will to improve; it diminishes our public spirit; it saps our incentives; it withers our souls. Cynics often see themselves as merely being world-weary. There is no new thing under the sun, the cynics say. They claim their weariness is wisdom. But it is usually mere posturing. Their weariness seems to be most effective when they consider the aspirations of those beneath them, who have neither power nor influence nor wealth. For these unfortunates, nothing can be done, the cynics declare. Hope is considered an affront to rationality: the notion that the individual has a responsibility for the community is considered a dangerous radicals. Ultimately., however, the life of a cynic is lonely and self-destructive. It is our human nature to make connections with other human beings. The gift of sympathy for one another is one of the most powerful sentiments we ever feel. If we do not have it, we are not human. Indeed it is so powerful that the cynic who denies it goes toward with himself.
