🔹 Cycas - Microsporophyll

The given specimen shows the following characters:

  1. It is a flattened structure and is triangular in shape.

  2. The basal part is narrow and sterile.

  3. The upper part gradually becomes narrow and pointed and is called apophysis.

  4. Fertile part lies between the basal part and the apophysis.

  5. Microsporangia are formed in definite sori on the ventral surface of the microsporophyll.

  6. Each sorus contains 2–6 microsporangia.

  7. Inducial hairs occur intermixed with the sporangia.

👉 By the above characters, the given specimen is identified as Cycas microsporophyll.

🔹 Cycas - Megasporophyll

The given specimen shows the following characters:

  1. It is a flat and dorsiventral structure.

  2. It has three regions:

    • Lower part: stalk-like portion

    • Middle fertile part: bearing ovules

    • Upper sterile part: pinna-like structure

  3. Brownish hairs (ramenta) are present all over the megasporophyll.

  4. 1–6 pairs of ovules are borne laterally in notches on the middle portion.

  5. The ovules are naked and orthotropous.

  6. The ovules are the largest in the plant kingdom.
